Preparing for Climate Changes -- Ms. Riche Outlaw, a NJ DEP administrator, will discuss the important roll of DEP’s recently established Office of Coastal Reliance to the Jersey Shore Group (Monmouth County) and Brookdale Community College students at 6 pm, Monday, May 20 at the college. The DEP’s new initiative will focus on helping municipalities get ready for future natural disasters.

Many communities along the Jersey shore, and even inland municipalities above the tidal waters, face a variety of challenging problems as global warming continues. Many of these challenges are predictable: rising sea levels; higher average temperatures; changing rainfall patterns that can affect everything from suburbanites’ sacrosanct front lawns, access to critical drinking water, agriculture and runoff.

Less evident but highly important problems include habitat preservation and restoration; electricity, hopefully fossil free, for continued growth; and aligning stricter zoning requirements while encouraging commercial development (read “jobs”) in appropriate areas, and even forest fires.

New Jersey citizens have become increasingly aware of these climate-induced changes, but more-so after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 killed at least 233 people in its path and inflicted nearly $70 billion in damages along the eastern seaboard before making landfall in Brigantine, NJ.

The meeting, free and open to the public, includes the BCC Environmental Club and students, the Jersey Shore (Monmouth) Sierra, and other environmental organizations. .

The talk, part of BCC and the Sierra’s “Science Monday” series of environmental lectures, is hosted by BCC’s Environmental Club to inform students about environmental issues.

A pizza and subs buffet begins at 6:00 p.m. in Warner Student Life Center (SLC) Twin Lights Rooms I and II, and the meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.

To get to Brookdale’s Lincroft campus, take Parkway Exit 109 to Route 520 West (Newman Springs Road, which becomes E. Main Street at the Lincroft campus). Take the traffic circle into the campus and follow the signs to the Warner Student Life Center (SLC) and parking lot 7, where the meeting will be in the SLC Twin Lights Rooms I and II. Use parking lot 7.  As you walk eastward towards the building complex, Warner is on the left. If lot 7 is full, use parking lots 5 or 6.
